Yurok Tribe Sustainable Forest Project

In an effort to repatriate historical lands and to protect fisheries and natural resources within tribal lands and the state of California, the Yurok Tribe embarked upon an ambitious effort to acquire several tracts of land, utilizing sale of carbon credits to finance the transaction.

The Yurok Tribe Sustainable Forest Project is currently the largest Improved Forest Management project ever verified under the Climate Action Reserve forest carbon program, generating more than a million offset credits during the first monitoring period.

ecoPartners contributed to all aspects of the process of designing and implementing the carbon project, assisting the Tribe in integrating a carbon project into existing timber operations and the establishment of a new sustainable forest management plan.

Together with the Tribe, ecoPartners designed an innovative carbon inventory which utilized existing timber cruise data to reduce the amount of supplemental inventory required for the carbon project. As a result, the Tribe reduced its inventory costs by approximately 60%.

ecoPartners also built the modeling projections that were used to quantify the carbon benefits of the Tribe’s sustainable forest management plan.
