Employee Spotlight: Celebrating Our Team’s Contributions in 2024

2024 marked EP Carbon’s 15th year providing technical consultation. Our team worked on carbon projects in Asia, Africa, The South Pacific, and North and South America. These projects achieved emissions removals and/or reductions through afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR), improved agricultural management (IAM), improved forest management (IFM), reduced emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD), wetland restoration and conservation (WRC), and more. EP Carbon worked closely with project proponents at differing stages in their development process to identify and address compliance and integrity gaps and to support project and monitoring design. EP Carbon worked with various different carbon standards in 2024, including the Climate Action Reserve (CAR), the Gold Standard (GS), and the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS).

Driving our success in 2024 was EP Carbon’s team of internationally recognized experts in ARR, IAM, IFM, REDD, and WRC projects. Our staff are located in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America and travel worldwide to conduct site visits for our clients. Many hold advanced degrees in scientific disciplines and possess immense knowledge of statistics, biometrics, remote sensing, and forest ecology in addition to carbon standard methodologies and markets. This post highlights last year’s key achievements of three of our exceptional staff members.

Joel has been with EP Carbon since 2017 and has served in different roles from Carbon Analyst and Technical Manager to Director of Technical Assurance. Before joining EP Carbon, Joel worked in environmental science and education. He received his Master of Science degree in Natural Resources and the Environment in 2013 from the University of Michigan, where his studies focused on international environmental policy. For his thesis, he was part of a team of students that conducted an analysis of the potential impacts of REDD+ at the project, jurisdictional, and national levels within Nepal, giving special attention to community forests and how REDD+ might impact them. Joel currently lives in Olympia, Washington, U.S.A, and is an avid American football fan of the Detroit Lions.

In his current role, Joel manages the technical work required to support voluntary carbon projects, with a particular emphasis on carbon accounting procedures. This past year, Joel actively supported baseline updates and monitoring activities for projects located in Central America and West Africa. He also participated in a site visit to a mangrove restoration project that connected him closely with community members in rural Mexico. After nearly 8 years with the company, Joel still enjoys working with a team that continues to impress him with their capacity and creativity to respond to changing markets.

Bianca has been with EP Carbon since 2022, and April 2025 will mark her 3-year anniversary with the company. Bianca started as an Analyst with EP Carbon and was quickly promoted to Senior Analyst. In 2024, she was promoted to Technical Manager. Before joining EP Carbon, Bianca worked in entomological and invasive species research labs for the USDA. She also worked in environmental outreach in her local community of Gainesville, Florida. Bianca holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Resource and Conservation from the University of Florida. She grew up in south Florida (U.S.A) and currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. She enjoys playing soccer and traveling in her free time.

In 2024, Bianca successfully directed her first project as Technical Manager, overseeing the work of three Analysts in completing a complex feasibility analysis and the drafting of an accompanying report. Bianca has worked on over a dozen feasibility studies since joining EP Carbon and has conducted numerous conformance analyses (a.k.a., gap assessments) as well. She has increasingly been involved in assessing projects during early development to provide quality recommendations to improve project design. This work has taken her beyond the typical consulting scope of EP Carbon’s work into project activity design. During 2024, Bianca also participated in three site visits. These visits took her to Chile, Guatemala, and Brazil, where she assessed project design elements against ARR requirements in the field. These site visits, in addition to being personally enriching, also allow Bianca (and all EP Carbon staff) to better assess project conformance against relevant carbon standard requirements and identify project gaps and recommend how to address them. Bianca is looking forward to a full year as technical manager and participating in more site visits, should the opportunity arise.

Jackson started with EP Carbon in August 2023. Prior to starting with the company, he worked as a Forest Technician for the Bureau of Land Management in the Tahoe National Forest in Nevada (U.S.A.) and as an agriculture researcher at the California Polytechnic State University’s experimental farm. Jackson received his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Management from California Polytechnic State University in 2022. He also volunteered and coordinated activities for the university’s Climate Smart Natural Resource Management Program. Jackson currently lives in Mexico City. He enjoys spending his free time volunteering at a local permaculture garden and community center, where he helps with mulching and maintenance on the garden’s irrigation system.

In 2024, Jackson worked primarily on EP Carbon projects located in Mexico and Argentina. He grew a great deal as an Analyst this past year and independently developed carbon accounting models and performed conformance analyses for several of his projects, while continuing to develop a strong knowledge of different Verra methodologies as well. Jackson also participated in a site visit to review an ARR and REDD project in coastal Mexico and, as a fluent Spanish speaker, was a great asset to the EP Carbon team in the field. Jackson is looking forward to growing into a more senior role with the company in 2025 and continuing to play a vital role in supporting EP Carbon’s active projects.

EP Carbon is proud of all of its staff’s accomplishments in 2024. Although we have chosen to highlight the accomplishments of Joel, Bianca, and Jackson above, the company received excellent contributions from all of our employees last year. We are looking forward to another great year of work in 2025 that will invite our staff to grow both personally and professionally, whether it be from the computer or while traveling far and wide to support our client’s efforts to develop high-integrity, impactful carbon projects.
